Saklikent
Visit this beautiful 18km long 300 metres deep canyon, the second largest in Europe, situated approximately 50km (30 miles) from Çalis. A suspended walkway takes you deep into the canyon to a bridge over the rapids. After climbing a dramatic path through the rocks you arrive at a traditional Turkish çayhane (tea house) where you can relax and enjoy baklava- a flaky pastry with nuts and spiced honey. After sampling some of Turkey’s traditional cuisine you can wade through the cool mountain waters of the canyon. It is a truly magnificent and refreshing experience. On the way to the gorge you will pass a large group of Roman remains, including an amphitheatre, some older Greek ruins and fantastically carved rock tombs. Time permitting you may also be taken to the local water park, no slides, swimming pools or log flumes, but a novel water garden based around a trout farm. This slightly eccentric attraction includes a bar with a stream with trout in running along counter-top! ideal for keeping the beer cool, and a waterfall coming out the side of a still living tree!
Dalyan
Take a day trip by boat, down the Dalyan river to visit Istuzu beach, the protected breeding ground of the endangered loggerhead turtles. Once you have had enough of the beach why not wallow in the rejuvenating mud-baths, allowing the beneficial qualities of the mud to soak in before climbing the hill to visit the 4th Century BC City of Kaunos, an important Carian border city.
Fethiye
A short ride from Çalis is the harbour town of Fethiye. Here are to be found the ancient cliff-side 4thC BC Lycean Rock Tombs featured on many Turkish postcards, carved into the limestone cliffs. Climb the steps to the largest tomb, dedicated to Amyntas & enjoy the stunning views of the bay. Spend a relaxing evening at one of the many fresh fish restaurants situated along the promenade. Don’t forget to visit the popular Tuesday market where you can buy your “Genuine Imitation Designer watches, T shirts etc”. Enjoy the Turkish Tea, which is usually freely offered by the stall-holders while you make your holiday purchase. Sample the Turkish Delight before you buy, a custom that is a surprise to the European tourist. Bargain jewellery sold by weight is a feature of this market.
